Snake theft from West Midlands pet shop – CCTV being checked

Sid the Snake was taken by a man who walked into the shop, not realising CCTV cameras were in operation

A pet shop in Brownhills, in the West Midlands, is threatening to go to the police with CCTV footage from the store, after a pet snake was stolen from the premises.

‘Sid the Snake’ was stolen from Chico’s Pet Supplies by a man who walked into the shop. He put his hand into the vivarium, grabbed the corn snake and shoved it in his pocket.

The staff are desperate for the safe return of the snake, as it could die if not cared for properly.

Sid the snake measures 15cm’s long and is only a few weeks old. His skin was shedding, which means he’s more vulnerable in the winter months. He’d only been at the shop for two weeks.

Victoria Mosedale, a helper at the store, said: “We’ve had children trying to put their hands in cages before, but it’s the first time we’ve had a live animal taken.”

The store made an online appeal, in which they made the point of saying how the store had signs up warning customers that they were on CCTV.

They said the shop now had a copy of the CCTV footage and it was going to be handed over to the police if the thief didn’t come forward. Staff at the pet shop said they just wanted the snake back because it’s only a baby and will need feeding.

Staff at Chico’s threatened to not only send the CCTV footage to the police but to post it on Facebook so everyone could see.

Sid the Snake was for sale along with the vivarium for £70 and needs feeding once a week. The corn snake is a docile non-venomous snake but if tormented could bite. They are native to North America and can grow to around 5ft long.

Staff at Chico’s are asking anyone with information to call 01543 370610, or make contact via their Facebook page.
