Birmingham businesses urged to install CCTV after break-ins

Two banks, a pub and a supermarket have been targeted and police say CCTV could help deter criminals

A series of raids across Birmingham have led to the police urging businesses in the city and surrounding areas to install CCTV on their premises, to help deter criminals and protect their businesses as Christmas time approaches.

The four break-ins all took place over a 24-hour period, so the police have issued a warning to the business community. Two banks, a supermarket and a pub have been targeted so far across the city.

The Hare and Hounds pub on Kingsbury Road, Minworth, was broken into at around 2.30am on Friday, December 2. Damage was caused and the thieves stole some money.

Sometime around 4.30pm on the same day, the HSBC off Kettlehouse Road, Kingstanding, was targeted by a couple of masked individuals who escaped on foot with an amount of cash.

At around 4.45pm on the same Friday, a Tesco Express store on Green Lane, Castle Bromwich, was the target of a thief. The man came up behind the security guard and stole the cash box from the guards hands as he made his way to his van. The thief ran off with the cash box.

During the early hours of Saturday morning just before 03:30am, the Halifax bank on Coventry Road, Sheldon was targeted by ram-raiders. Vehicles were used to smash through the front window and the offenders made off with the cash machine.

The police are now urging businesses to install CCTV and make sure their premises are fully protected and secured, especially all entrances, exits and windows.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Businesses need to be vigilant. CCTV can be used to deter criminals and to record crime if it happens. It is an extremely useful and powerful tool for the police and has assisted in the prevention and detection of many crimes.”
