Man slashed across face in beer row was caught on CCTV

A row over which type of beer to buy ended in a man being slashed across the face with a knife. The shocking incident happened on 18th May 2013 outside R K Wines on Summer Lane.

Desmond Porter of Old Snow Hill was convicted this week and was jailed for 4 years and 8 months for the attack with has left the victim scarred for life.

The staff at the off-license were so scared that they closed the shutters and residents upstairs watched on as they called 999. When the Police arrived Porter ran throwing the knife away as he fled.

Det Con Andrew Hiles said: “Even though we had the crime captured on camera, Porter failed to take responsibility for his actions and repeatedly denied the assault. It was only when he was shown the CCTV footage that he changed his tune.”

Summary from Jonathan Ratcliffe of CCTV Birmingham

This demonstrates the importance of having the right quality of CCTV fitted in your newsagent or bar. You need to consider how this might have turned out – were staff at risk? were customers at risk? The evidence in the hearing clearly shows Mr Porter being at the scene, attacking the man, and being chased by Police – a damning verdict.
